candelabrum-necrotelepathyNecrotelepathy’ is the debut full-length from shadowy Portuguese shaman Candelabrum and it contains two epic rites of raw, occult, otherworldly, cavernous, recorded-in-a-pit-or-cave-or-maybe-in-hell-itself-except-there-is-no-hell Black Metal – ‘Distant Voices In The Darkest Night’ and ‘Prayers For The Damnation Of Man’ placed back to back, two devilish offerings at the altar of decay.

I wish Altare would get the guy who punches the holes in the middle of their records to make them a teeny bit bigger as they keep getting stuck on my platter. Literally. Not that it would necessarily be a bad thing to have to play this record over and over again until the end of time but I do like to have a choice and it’s only a matter of time before I either lose my deck or a precious record or perhaps my mind.

This strictly-limited LP is a real underground effort, pregnant with homemade spirit and aesthetic; adorned with staggering, evil Black Metal that truly cannot be topped because it’s nigh on perfect. Totally essential, even if you do end up having to fork out on a new record player.

phobocosm-bringer-of-droughtPhobocosm’s second full-length, ‘Bringer Of Drought’, sees them drop gear somewhat to emit four harrowing, ominous slabs totaling 35 minutes. Slow, doomy passages add to the sense of crushing haplessness as the earth swallows us whole, venting its fury through quakes and floods, turning all to dust.

Twelve inches of black wax inside a gatefold sleeve somehow survive to tell the tale of nature’s retribution.

ride-for-revenge-belowAs we have by now come to expect, Ride For Revenge’s 20-minute contribution, ‘Lust Fuck For Torment’, is exceptional. These guys can simply do no wrong. On Side B, Below chips in with four tracks of suitably harrowing, unnerving madness to complete a superb split album that belongs in every collection.

Another triumph for the festered underground.

NÉCROPOLE – NÉCROPOLE LP (Northern Heritage Records)

Saturday, September 10th, 2016

necropole-necropoleNécropole’ gathers all material from the band’s two previous demos – ‘Atavisme…’ and ‘Ostara’ – onto one record to deliver 45 minutes in total of excellent underground Black Metal. Buzzing guitars and razorblade vocals abound, just the way we love it.

In the background, the unobtrusive yet impressive drums enhance the sinister melody that prevails. Side A is particularly great. All in all, this is good stuff from the guys who brought you Caverne.

almyrkvi-pupil-of-the-searing-maelstromI met Garðar S. Jónsson outside Willemeen in Arnhem, Netherlands on Sunday evening. Seemed like a really nice person. When I encountered him again, four hours later, he was on stage with Slidhr, helping Jo out as live bass player. Then he put on some corpsepaint before returning to the stage with Sinmara, playing guitar. Seemed like a really demonic individual now…

The Dimensional Nomads gig was awesome and, on the flight home, I started to think about how amazing this collective of musicians is – Svartidauði, Sinmara, Slidhr, Wormlust, Myrkr, Rebirth Of Nefast, Haud Mundus – and how interlinked they are. Such a convergence of incredible Black Metal.

I had forgotten all about the Almyrkvi MLP, ‘Pupil Of The Searing Maelstrom’, which is actually the work of Garðar alone. The record is 26 minutes long and it’s something of a curveball as it sounds more like Blut Aus Nord than any of the aforementioned hordes. But – predictably – it is astonishingly good and showcases the versatility and sheer excellence of one of Black Metal’s most potent (and dead on) forces right now.
