Ride For Revenge - Thy Horrendous YearningRide For Revenge’s uncanny and welcome ability to consistently conjure some the most demented, unique and twisted Black Metal known to man was underlined indelibly by sixth full-length, ‘Thy Horrendous Yearning’, which is yet another exhibition of their trademark noisy, mid-paced, utterly-off-the-wall, drum-and-bass-heavy psychedelic psychosis.

There is no other force quite like Ride For Revenge and all of their records are mandatory, including this one. Crushing, life-affirming madness again presented in a gatefold jacket with printed lyrics to read along with. You probably have this already?…

THRONEUM – MORBID DEATH TALES LP (Hells Headbangers Records)

Tuesday, April 4th, 2017

Throneum - Morbid Death TalesMorbid Death Tales’ is the seventh full-length from primitive Polish Death Metal duo Throneum and, even though it only emerged late in 2016, it has already been succeeded by an eighth. There are eleven fairly simple and straightforward raw, recorded-in-a-garage songs on the record and the running time is less than 33 minutes, so it’s a pretty easy one to digest.

Not least because compatriot Mark Of The Devil of Cultes Des Ghoules fame lends his voice to the last two hymns, which gives the LP a whole extra dimension … filthy Death Metal with a little sprinkling of Black Metal gold dust at the end. Not a gimmick, no, this is great stuff.

Nocturnal Blood - Abnormalities PrevailAbnormalities Prevail’ gathers most of Nocturnal Blood’s recordings to date (outside of the 2010 full length, ‘Devastated Graves – The Morbid Celebration’) onto two slabs of black vinyl. That’s 17 songs in total (not 20 – brief intros and outros don’t count), recorded between ’07 and ’09.

The best material can be found on Side C – which is culled from the ‘Imperial Impurity’ split with Sanguis Imperem (sounding like Entombed in overdrive!) – but all in all this is an excellent collection of underground art committed to analogue by the sole entity known as Ghastly Apparition and presented here in a fetching gatefold jacket.

Wonderful one-man Death Metal, loaded with integrity and spirit.

Void Meditation Cult - Sulfurous Prayers Of Blight And DarknessTechnically, ‘Sulfurous Prayers Of Blight And Darkness’ is a split LP; effectively – as it features contributions by what are essentially two incarnations of the same (one-man) band – it isn’t.

Side A of the record contains the four songs from Void Meditation Cult’s 2011 demo ‘Sulfurous Prayers’, while Side B is graced with the much-rawer four-track 2009 ‘Blight And Darkness’ demo, which was released under the rather-embarrassing, almost-illiterate handle of Sperm Of Antichrist (the erstwhile moniker Desolate Defiler operated under briefly prior to opting for a well-advised name change that same year). Confused? Me fucking too.

Normally, I wouldn’t condone a change of name mid-stride but, seriously, who wants to be known as Sperm Of Antichrist for any longer than a few minutes? Anyway, the befuddled history lesson has kind of thrown me off the scent, so let us move on to the news…

In terms of the actual music on here, suffice to say that ‘Sulfurous Prayers Of Blight And Darkness’ contains some nice, evil, deathly Black Metal, kind of like a less-immediate Demoncy or Grand Belial’s Key or Encoffination even (with some ambient Darkspace-ish moments included, too). Formulaic it may be – with many songs boasting creepy intros / outros, for example – but it is a winning formula in most respects and, by and large, this is a truly superb record that was well worth the investment.
