PREDATORY LIGHT – PREDATORY LIGHT LP (Invictus Productions / Psychic Violence Records)

Predatory Light – Predatory LightI was pretty sure I already reviewed Predatory Light’s split with Vorde but, seeing as I can’t find any trace of such a scribbling, I will have to reluctantly concede that I didn’t. This is about the tenth time that I’ve looked for a previous review only to discover that it doesn’t exist, so either some of them are vanishing or I’m losing my marbles.

Anyhow, I picked up Predatory Light’s debut full-length at the recent Ash Borer / Vanum gig in Dublin a few weeks back and have had it on steady rotation ever since. It’s a really superb slab of catchy, simplistic, repetitive US Black Metal and I’m particularly fond of that thing they do with the lyrics – effectively only a few lines in each song and every line is repeated multiple times before moving on to the next one, with the momentum gathering all the time.

Sightless beast of the mutant dark, sightless beast of the mutant dark, sightless beast of the mutant dark, sightless beast of the mutant dark, sightless beast of the mutant dark…

It’s very effective.

Both label(s) and band have done a magnificent job with this utterly addictive record and it’s one I can but heartily recommend.

QRIXKUOR – THREE DEVILS DANCE MLP (Invictus Productions)

Saturday, October 15th, 2016

qrixkuor-three-devils-danceI’ve decided in the week running up to Caledonian Darkness II to generally only listen to bands who are playing at the festival. As I really appreciate some 13 of the 15 hordes taking part, this leaves me with a lot of scope!

Yesterday, I reached for Qrixkuor’s rather astounding MLP, ‘Three Devils Dance’, first, electing to start at the beginning as they are opening proceedings at 4pm on the Friday evening.

I ended up spinning the record six or seven times before the cock rolled over and have already had it on rotation twice this morning. Not leaving me much time to shoot through the other records that constitute my cunning week-long plan but, fuck, this is terrific blackened Death Metal, dark and dangerous and murky but with hidden depths as well and more deft touches than a Barcelona match.

An easy one to file away because it’s the only vinyl I own from a band beginning with the letter ‘Q’ and, at 38 minutes, the three-track offering is longer than many full-lengths. Wonderful stuff. Roll on Friday and an early start in the Scottish capital! Looking forward to seeing these hooded demons again.

ZOM – FLESH ASSIMILATION LP (Invictus Productions)

Sunday, June 7th, 2015

ZOM - Flesh AssimilationThe first thing that jumps out at me regarding the vinyl incarnation of ‘Flesh Assimilation’ is the thought and creativity that went into the triple-fold cover; the second is the unnervingly dank, sterile and soulless sound (compared to the CD edition), which somehow renders these Irish death-mongers ever murkier and more depraved than hitherto.

Unless watching the band live on Friday night has completely fucked up my ears, the difference between the analogue and digital versions of ZOM’s frightening debut full-length is night and day. This record is dirty and ugly; disgusting and rotten to the core; angry and born of the most grime-encrusted, piss-stained, disease-ridden sewers.

Which is fully understandable as it was conceived and executed in the greatest fucking cesspit on the planet.
